Chimney liner installation in Metro Detroit

Stainless steel chimney liners start at $2,200 installed, and aluminum liners for certain gas appliances start at $1,400. The liner is the inner wall of the flue, the surface smoke and exhaust actually travel along. Plenty of older Metro Detroit houses still have their original clay tiles, and some have no liner at all.

What a liner does

A sound liner shields the surrounding brick and nearby wood framing from heat, and keeps acidic exhaust from eating into the mortar. A liner sized to the appliance it serves also drafts better, so smoke and exhaust leave the house instead of lingering in the flue.

When a new liner comes up

  • An inspection or camera finds cracked, shifted or missing flue tiles
  • You're adding a wood insert or stove to an existing fireplace
  • A furnace or water heater gets swapped and still vents up the chimney
  • After a chimney fire

Furnace upgrades cause a problem many homeowners don't expect. High-efficiency furnaces vent through PVC pipe in an outside wall, which can leave the water heater as the only thing using a flue built for two appliances. With so little warm exhaust in such a big flue, moisture condenses on the tile and slowly eats into the mortar. Lining the flue to the water heater's size solves it.

Stainless steel

For anything that burns wood, we use stainless steel. The final price depends on the size of the flue, the height of the chimney and what's connected to it.

Aluminum

Aluminum liners are made for certain gas appliances only. After we've looked at your setup, we'll tell you which one it calls for.

How installation goes

  1. We take the flue's full height and inside size, and note the appliance it serves.
  2. The flue is swept so the liner goes into a clean chimney.
  3. The liner is lowered from the roof, with insulation around it where the job calls for it.
  4. At the bottom it's connected to the appliance, and at the top it's sealed to the crown and capped.

We don't price liners over the phone, because the liner has to suit what's connected to it.

Questions

Common questions about chimney liners

Can a cracked clay liner be repaired?

Sometimes a few tiles can be patched, but cracked or shifted tiles more often mean a new liner. A camera inspection shows which situation you're in.

Does a gas fireplace need a liner?

It depends on the appliance and the chimney. We check both before recommending anything.

How long does installation take?

Most liners go in within a day once the parts are here.
